Al Razfa, also written al-razfa or razfa, is the slow, formal Emirati line dance used at official receptions and to greet guests of honour. Rows of men in kandura and ghutra stand shoulder to shoulder, chant poetry and sway with bamboo canes to live drums. It has less movement and more chant than ayala, which makes it the most ceremonial of the group. You can book a razfa troupe of 8 to 12 performers in Dubai or Abu Dhabi for a government event, a delegation visit, a formal opening or a wedding.
Price: a ceremonial razfa troupe of 8 to 12 performers for 1 or 2 sets of 15 to 20 minutes usually costs AED 5,500 to AED 10,000. See all prices.
What a razfa performance looks like
The performers line up in rows facing the guests or facing each other. The drums give a steady beat. A poet leads the chant and the rows answer, verse by verse. The movement is light and controlled, and the tone is dignified rather than playful. That is why razfa is booked to greet dignitaries and for receptions rather than for a dance floor.
Where the dance comes from
Razfa grew from Bedouin warrior traditions, performed before going to battle or to celebrate a victory. Its themes are bravery, honour and solidarity. It is popular in the Northern Emirates and is a regular feature at national celebrations and official ceremonies.
When to choose razfa
- Government and official receptions. The classic choice for formal protocol.
- Delegation visits. A respectful welcome for international guests.
- Ribbon cuttings and openings. One or two short sets at the key moment.
- Weddings. A formal, traditional moment in the programme.
- National Day. Next to an ayala troupe or yola performers. See National Day shows.
When to choose something else
Razfa is the wrong pick for a lively mall activation or a party where guests want to clap and move. That event needs the energy of yola or a full ayala show. Booking the wrong dance for the audience is the most common and costly mistake in Emirati folklore bookings, so tell the team the occasion and the guest list before you pay a deposit.
Live music and poetry
Razfa is performed with live drummers, and other traditional musicians can join the troupe. The poetry recitation is the heart of the show. For a government audience you can ask for a longer chant section.
Timing and space
Most razfa bookings are 1 or 2 sets of 15 to 20 minutes, timed to an arrival, a speech or a ribbon cutting. Rows of 8 to 12 performers need a clear strip along the guest route or the front of a stage. At a hotel entrance, agree with the venue where the rows stand so cars and guests can still pass. See corporate and VIP welcomes for arrival planning.
