Yola, yowla, al yowla

Yola dance in Dubai and the UAE

A cane or a ceremonial rifle spun high above the head and caught on the beat. Yola is more energetic and playful than ayala, and it works well on a stage.

Yola is the Emirati dance where performers spin and toss a cane or a ceremonial rifle above their heads and catch it on the beat. Usually young men perform it, alone or in small groups, to live drums. It is shorter and faster than ayala and reads well from far away, so it suits stages, mall activations, exhibitions and National Day shows in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. You can book 1 to 4 performers on their own, or add them to an ayala troupe.

Price: 1 to 4 yola performers for 2 sets of 15 to 20 minutes usually cost AED 1,800 to AED 4,500. See all prices.

Yola, yowla, al yowla

You will see the name written in several ways: yola, yowla, yolla, al yola and al yowla. They all mean the same dance. Some people also use yowla as another name for ayala or for the stick dance in general, so if you have a video of what you want, send it with your enquiry and we will match the style.

What happens in a yola performance

The performers wear kandura and ghutra and dance to live drums. They throw the cane or rifle up so it spins, then catch it in rhythm, alone or a few at a time. When canes are used, the clash of the sticks, like swords in a mock fight, is part of the sound. The dance began as a mock fight and a celebration of past victories, which is why it feels proud and playful at the same time.

Canes or rifles

Yola is performed with thin bamboo canes or with ceremonial rifles. A rifle spinning show looks dramatic on a National Day stage. Canes suit a hotel lobby, a wedding or an indoor reception. Both are props for the dance. Tell the venue in advance, because hotels list props such as canes and rifles in their internal approval. For a night event, some yola shows can also include a fire element. Ask the team whether it is possible at your venue.

Where yola works best

  • National Day stages and malls. Short, bright sets that draw a crowd. See National Day shows.
  • Exhibitions and activations. Repeat 15 to 20 minute sets through the day.
  • Ayala programmes. Add yola performers to an ayala troupe for more energy. See the ayala dance show.
  • Weddings and private events. A smaller group with canes for an indoor hall.

Space and safety

Yola needs height as well as width. Check the ceiling height, chandeliers and low lights above the stage before you book. Keep guests a few steps back from the performers and leave a clear lane in front of the group.
