An ayala show is a group performance: two rows of men in white kandura face each other, each with a thin bamboo cane, and move together to large drums while a chanted poem passes between the rows. A standard booking is 2 sets of 30 minutes, or a single 15 to 20 minute set for a welcome. You can book it for National Day, weddings, government functions, corporate events and festivals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Price: an ayala show with 4 to 6 performers usually costs AED 3,500 to AED 6,000, with 8 to 12 performers AED 6,500 to AED 10,000, and with 14 to 16 performers AED 10,500 to AED 14,000. See ayala prices.
Where the dance comes from
Ayala comes from the Bedouin tribes of the region. It was performed after a victory or an important gathering of the community, and the two rows were said to stand for two tribes or two teams. Over time it became a national symbol. Today you see it at National Day, at weddings, at royal and official events and at heritage festivals across the Emirates.
The drums
The drummers stand in the space between the rows. Large round drums give the deep beat, tambourines add texture, and flutes can add a melody. The drummers set the pace for the canes and the steps, and the dancers follow them. Every booking includes live drummers. For a bigger sound, 2 to 4 extra drummers can join the troupe.
The canes
Each dancer holds one long, thin bamboo cane that stands for a sword. The rows raise and lower the canes together, tap them in time and sway as one. In some shows, and in the related harbiya, ceremonial rifles replace the canes. They are blunt props, but the venue still needs to know about them in advance. See harbiya.
The poetry
The chant is what makes ayala more than a dance. A poet leads a line of verse, one row sings it, the other row answers. The words speak of courage, pride and togetherness. For a formal or government audience you can ask the troupe to extend the chant, and for a lively party you can ask for a shorter, faster set.
Ayala dancers or an ayala band?
People search for both. An ayala band, or ayyala band, means the drummers and singers who play and chant for the dance. In practice you book one troupe: the dancers in the rows and the musicians between them come together. If you also want melody, oud, qanun or violin players can play on the same night.
How the show fits your event
- As a welcome. One 15 to 20 minute set while guests arrive.
- As the main act. 2 sets of 30 minutes, or 3 sets of 20 minutes across the evening.
- As part of a heritage corner. With Arabic coffee, henna or calligraphy close by.
- With guests joining. A short part at the end where guests try a simple version.
Shows work indoors and outdoors. A wider space lets the rows stand further apart, which looks better. See the planning guide for space and timing.
