Harbiya is a traditional men's line dance performed to drums and chanted poetry, with rifles, swords or sticks moving in time. In Dubai it is close to ayala and the two names are sometimes used for the same thing, but harbiya is usually faster and puts more weight on the rifle or sword movement. You can book a harbiya troupe of 6 to 10 performers for a wedding majlis, a heritage event, a festival or a corporate evening in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Price: a harbiya troupe of 6 to 10 performers for 2 sets of 20 to 30 minutes usually costs AED 4,500 to AED 9,000. See all prices.
Two dances share the name
When people in Dubai ask for harbiya, they usually mean one of two things. Tell us which one, or send a video.
The Emirati harbiya. A relative of ayala. Men stand in lines in kandura and ghutra, drums play between them, and the dance moves faster than ayala with rifles or swords. It is common at the men's majlis of a wedding and at heritage village events.
The Najdi style. Some people use harbiya for a sword dance from the Najd region of Saudi Arabia. The dancers wear Najdi robes and headgear, move in lines or circles with swords or wooden sticks, and slow measured steps alternate with dramatic sword movements. Live drummers play the rhythm and the dancers often chant poetry.
Both are booked as troupes, and both suit a strong, proud moment in the programme.
How harbiya compares with ayala
Ayala is the more ceremonial form, which is why it is the standard choice for National Day and government functions. Harbiya picks up the pace and gives the rifle or sword a bigger role, which suits the men's majlis of a wedding or a heritage festival. If you want both dances on the same night, say so in your enquiry. See the ayala dance show.
Where harbiya fits
- Weddings. The groom's majlis and the arrival of male guests. See ayala for weddings.
- Heritage and cultural festivals. A strong set that draws a crowd.
- Formal celebrations. Openings and national occasions, often next to an ayala or razfa troupe.
- Corporate events and hotel shows. A short, high energy set for guests from abroad.
Troupe size and timing
A harbiya troupe is usually 6 to 10 performers. Most bookings are 2 sets of 20 to 30 minutes with a short break. The troupe performs in traditional dress and brings its own props. Live drummers are part of the show, and 2 to 4 extra drummers can be added for a bigger room.
Props and permits
Rifles and swords used in harbiya are ceremonial and blunt, but hotels and venues list them in their internal approval, so tell the venue in advance. A paid show in a public venue in Dubai needs a DET entertainment permit, and Abu Dhabi needs DCT approval. The planning guide covers both.
