To book an ayala troupe in Dubai, decide four things first: the dance, the number of performers, the space and the timing. Then send them with the date and the venue. Standard bookings need 3 to 10 days notice, and National Day week, Ramadan and the wedding season need 3 to 4 weeks. This guide walks through each choice, plus dress, props and permits.
Step 1: choose the dance for the audience
The costliest mistake is booking the wrong dance. Match it to the occasion:
| Occasion | Dance |
|---|---|
| National Day, government functions, grand arrivals | Ayala |
| Formal receptions, guests of honour | Al Razfa |
| Stages, malls, exhibitions | Yola |
| Men's wedding majlis, heritage events | Harbiya or ayala |
| Heritage themed event wanting something different | Al Liwa |
If you only know it as the stick dance, describe what you saw or send a short video. See the Emirati folklore troupe for each dance.
Step 2: pick the group size
- 4 to 6 performers: a hotel lobby welcome or a smaller majlis.
- 8 to 12 performers: a wedding stage, a gala entrance or a conference opening.
- 14 to 16 performers: National Day, a large ballroom or an outdoor government event.
More performers make a wider formation, which matters on a big stage. The price guide shows the usual range for each size.
Step 3: check the space
Ayala needs two rows facing each other with drummers in the middle, so measure the length and width of the open floor. Clear cables, low furniture and decorations from the strip. For yola, check the ceiling height and any chandeliers, because canes and rifles go high. At an entrance, keep a lane for guests and cars. Outdoors, choose a flat area for the drummers.
Step 4: fix the timing
- Welcome set: 15 to 20 minutes, timed to the arrival.
- Main show: 2 sets of 30 minutes with a short break.
- Long event: 3 sets of 20 minutes, for example at arrival, on the main stage and at the close.
- Ramadan: after iftar, about 15 to 20 minutes. See Ramadan.
Give the troupe one contact person and a clear cue for each set.
Step 5: dress and props
The men perform in kandura and ghutra. Troupes bring their own costumes and canes or ceremonial rifles. The props are blunt, but hotels still list them in their internal approval, so tell the venue in advance.
Step 6: permits
A paid performance in a public venue in Dubai needs a DET entertainment permit. In Abu Dhabi the equivalent is DCT approval. Hotels and private venues usually hold their own licence and need only an internal approval that confirms the act, the timing and the props. The team coordinates permits for public venues and confirms what your hotel needs.
Step 7: sound and music
Live drummers and chanting are part of every ayala show. In a large room or outdoors, the chant needs sound support, arranged with the venue's AV team or supplied. You can add 2 to 4 extra drummers for a bigger sound, or book oud and qanun players for music after the dance.
Step 8: send your enquiry
Include the date, the venue, the occasion, the number of guests, the size of the space, the times you want the sets and whether the venue is public or private. You get the troupe that fits, videos and a price. Message the team on WhatsApp or use the quote form.
