Emirati dancers perform the folk dances of the UAE in national dress, to live drums and chanted poetry. The best known are Al Ayala, yola, harbiya, Al Razfa and Al Liwa, and each fits a different occasion. You can book a troupe of 4 to 16 performers for National Day, a wedding, a hotel welcome, a government function, an exhibition or a heritage event in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Tell us the occasion and the audience, and we suggest the dance and the troupe size.
Price: Emirati dance shows usually cost from about AED 1,800 for a small yola act to AED 14,000 for a full ayala troupe of 14 to 16. An ayala troupe of 8 to 12 usually costs AED 6,500 to AED 10,000. See all prices.
The Emirati folk dances
Al Ayala. Two facing rows of men with thin bamboo canes, drums between them, a chant passing from row to row. The standard choice for National Day, government functions and grand wedding entrances. See the ayala dance show.
Yola. Performers spin and toss a cane or a ceremonial rifle above the head, alone or in small groups. Energetic and easy to see from far away. See yola.
Harbiya. Close to ayala but faster, with more rifle or sword movement. Common at the men's majlis of a wedding and at heritage village events. See harbiya.
Al Razfa. A slow, formal line dance, heavy on the chant, used to greet dignitaries. See Al Razfa.
Al Liwa. A drum led dance linked to the seafaring communities of the UAE. It is requested less often, so it stands out at a heritage themed event.
Why the choice of dance matters
The costliest mistake is booking the wrong dance for the audience. A rifle heavy ayala troupe at a relaxed corporate cocktail party feels out of place. A formal razfa troupe at a busy mall activation lacks the energy the crowd expects. Tell the team the occasion, who is coming and the type of venue before you pay a deposit.
One troupe, several dances
You can book more than one dance for the same event. For example, an ayala welcome when guests arrive and yola performers on stage later in the evening. Or, for a government reception, razfa to greet the guests of honour and ayala for the main set. Say what you have in mind and the team plans the programme.
The stick dance and other names
Many guests ask for the "stick dance" or "UAE traditional dance" because they do not know the Arabic names. That is fine. Describe what you saw, or send a short video, and we match it to the right dance. The spellings vary too: ayala, ayyala and al ayyala are the same dance, and so are yola, yowla and al yowla.
Add a heritage corner
Emirati dancers are often booked with falconry displays, camels, Arabic coffee servers, henna artists, Arabic calligraphy and Al Sadu weaving. A combined quote is usually cheaper than booking each element on its own. This works well for National Day, exhibitions and family days. See National Day shows.
Women's performances
For ladies' gatherings and female only events, female dance groups can be arranged on request. At weddings, an ayala or harbiya troupe for the men's majlis is often booked together with a Khaleeji dancer for the women's hall. See ayala for weddings.
