Questions people ask

Who runs this website?

AyalaDancersDubai.com is a booking service for ayala troupes and Emirati folklore groups, based in Dubai. Every enquiry made here is handled by our team in Dubai.

Ayala, ayyala, al ayyala, ayalla, ayallah. Which spelling is right?

All of them. They are English spellings of the same Arabic name. Many guests also call it the stick dance. Whichever you search for, it is the same dance with two facing rows, canes, drums and chant.

Yola, yowla, yolla or al yowla?

Also one dance written several ways. In yola, performers spin and toss a cane or a ceremonial rifle above the head. Some people use yowla for ayala too, so send a video if you are unsure.

What is the difference between ayala, harbiya and razfa?

Ayala is the ceremonial line dance with canes and chant. Harbiya is faster, with more rifle or sword movement. Razfa is the slowest and most formal, used to greet guests of honour.

How much do ayala dancers cost?

A troupe of 4 to 6 usually costs AED 3,500 to AED 6,000, 8 to 12 performers AED 6,500 to AED 10,000, and 14 to 16 performers AED 10,500 to AED 14,000.

How long is a show?

Usually 2 sets of 30 minutes, or 3 sets of 20 minutes. A single 15 to 20 minute set is common for a welcome.

How many performers should I book?

4 to 6 for a lobby or a small majlis, 8 to 12 for a wedding or gala entrance, 14 to 16 for National Day and large venues.

Do the performers bring their costumes and canes?

Yes. They perform in kandura and ghutra and bring their own canes or ceremonial rifles.

Is there live music?

Yes. Shows include live drummers and chanting. You can add 2 to 4 extra drummers.

Do I need a permit?

A paid show in a public venue in Dubai needs a DET permit, and in Abu Dhabi DCT approval. Hotels and private venues usually need only an internal approval that lists the props.

How far ahead should I book?

3 to 10 days for a normal date. 3 to 4 weeks for National Day week, Ramadan and the October to April wedding season.

Can ayala be booked in Ramadan?

Yes, after iftar, with shorter sets of about 15 to 20 minutes.

Can women perform?

Female dance groups can be arranged on request for ladies' gatherings and female only events.

Do you cover Abu Dhabi and other emirates?

Yes. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates. Travel outside Dubai is quoted separately.
